Choose the right AP automation solution for your business
Whether you’re scaling globally or streamlining payments, the right AP solution makes all the difference. See how Tipalti stacks up to BILL and AvidXchange—and find the best fit for your needs.
When to Choose AvidXchange
Your business has multi-entity needs.
AvidXchange is designed for mid-sized companies with complex AP workflows, multiple entities, or industry-specific needs (like real estate, retail, HOAs).
You require robust approval workflows and Payment Controls.
The system has deep workflow customization features, strong internal controls, and a dedicated bill payment network, making it ideal for companies with strict audit and approval requirements.
Your company needs deeper integrations.
AvidXchange integrates with over 200 different accounting systems and ERPs. This includes industry-specific systems like MRI, Yardi, and Sage Intacct. This makes it a fit for businesses needing a tailored ERP/AP sync.
When to Choose BILL
Your business requires fast processing.
BILL works best for small to lower mid-market organizations that are looking for a fast setup, an intuitive dashboard, and streamlined AP/AR in a single platform.
You require built-in integrations.
BILL seamlessly integrates with Xero, QuickBooks, NetSuite, and many others. This helps finance teams eliminate manual double entry and keep their books up to date.
You need a hybrid system for both AP and AR.
If your finance team wants to manage payables and receivables from a single spot, BILL offers features like recurring payments, approvals, and ACH/wire options. The system provides an all-in-one, user-friendly experience.
4 Signs You’ve Outgrown BILL or AvidXchange
While BILL is an excellent choice for small businesses handling manual AP tasks, it can quickly hit its limits as your business grows. Here are four signs it’s time to move up to Tipalti:
1. You’re Paying a Growing Number of International Suppliers
BILL supports international payments, but mainly through wire transfers. Tipalti offers a broader, more scalable solution, supporting payments to 196 countries in 120 currencies via ACH, PayPal, wire, eCheck, and more.
2. Your AP Team Is Drowning in High Payment Volumes
Manual processing doesn’t scale. If your finance team handles hundreds (or even thousands) of payments monthly, Tipalti’s end-to-end AP automation and seamless ERP integrations will eliminate bottlenecks and reduce manual workload.
3. You Need Stronger Internal Controls and Compliance
As your business grows, so does the need for governance. Tipalti offers enterprise-grade controls, including automated approval workflows, audit trails, and fraud prevention tools.
4. Month-End Close and Reconciliation Are Slowing Your Business Down
Tipalti will streamline reconciliation with real-time, in-depth reporting. This will accelerate your financial close, improve accuracy, and reduce the risk of missed or duplicate entries.
What Our Customers Say
In our old system, BILL, it was difficult to create all of our payments. We work with many international partners and suppliers and need to pay these people in different markets. If we can’t pay them effectively, it limits our reach. We used to spend three hours a week making payments. Now, it’s down to minutes, which has allowed us to reduce our payables workload by 95%.
Leslie Pesante | Head of Finance, SkillShare
With Tipalti, payments flow smoothly. It used to take one person four to five business days to process all the contractor payments, but now it takes me an hour.
Jessica Hardy | VP of Finance, Art of Problem Solving
Our greatest exposure to an audit deficiency is in accounts payable, processing, and payments. By automating the process, we almost completely eliminated the likelihood of an audit deficiency in that area.
Jill Durkin | Controller and Fractor, ImaginAb

Tipalti as A Primary Alternative
The best alternative to BILL and AvidXchange is the Tipalti platform. Tipalti is regulated as a money services business and has US money transmitter licenses (MTLs) in every state that requires them.
Tipalti is also authorized by the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) as an Electronic Money Institution. This is an essential distinction between Tipalti and other payout providers, especially amidst the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank.
Tipalti customers gain significant benefits by using our global payments solution over other non-regulated providers. We partner with blue-chip banks Citi, JP Morgan Chase, and Wells Fargo, and have redundancy built in for fast and reliable global payment remittance.
Tipalti eliminates up to 80% of the accounts payable workload and automates the entire payment management process. With automated invoice processing, you can make mass payments to suppliers and partners in any country while cutting costs and waste.
When comparing all three systems, note some of these key differences:
Integrations
Tipalti integrates with any ERP and accounting system, including many popular brands, such as:
- Oracle NetSuite (including OneWorld)
- QuickBooks
- Sage (Intacct, 50, 100, 200, 300, X3, Bright Pearl)
- Xero
- Acumatica
- Microsoft Dynamics 365 (Business Central, F&O, NAV, GP)
- SAP (Business One, S/4HANA, ByDesign, ECC)
- Oracle Fusion
- Workday
- Infor Syteline
- Visibility
- Odoo
- QAD
- IQMS

Compliance
AvidXchange and BILL do not offer built-in tax features, validation, or regulatory compliance controls. AvidXchange does not collect tax forms. The payer must manage them on their own or rely on an outside tax consultant.
Tipalti offers tax features that meet IRS requirements (as prescribed by KPMG), plus OFAC and other sanctions screening before any payment is processed. Part of the onboarding workflow includes collecting and validating W-9/W-8 tax form data. Tipalti generates 1099/1042-S tax prep files for EOY reporting. They also collect and validate local/VAT tax IDs for non-US countries.
Sanctions Screening
AvidXchange does not come with any proactive OFAC or sanctions screening. That’s because onboarding is done manually by entry-level employees. This puts a business at risk of paying a bad entity on a government blacklist, which can potentially result in frozen accounts.
Tipalti goes the extra mile and actively screens all payees before every transaction is processed. This helps with regulatory compliance.
Supplier Services
Tipalti is all about self-service, while brands like AvidXchange and BILL trust employees with supplier-sensitive banking details. Avid onboards people through a call center, and details are manually entered into the system.
Tipalti offers a branded supplier portal that’s available 24/7. Vendors can update their contact and banking details all in one spot. The solution has over 26,000 global payment validation rules to automatically verify data in real time. This not only reduces payment errors but also ensures suppliers are always paid on time.
Although BILL offers a supplier portal, there are limited payment options compared to Tipalti. The white-labeled self-service Tipalti portal enables suppliers to perform tasks like:
- Choose the payment method
- Choose currency
- Set thresholds
- View invoice and payment history
- Receive branded notifications
Global Payments
When it comes to international payments, Tipalti streamlines the entire process. They can perform payouts to 196 countries in 120 currencies, using 50+ payment methods. The platform also gives a business advanced payment configuration options like setting thresholds and fee-splitting.
BILL is designed for smaller companies and cannot handle high-volume or complex payment systems. They only offer wire transfers for global payments, which are highly susceptible to fraud. You also have to be based in the United States to make any international payments.
AvidXchange has limited options for global payments and is mostly focused on domestic payments. It recently launched cross-border payments in partnership with Wise – specific to customers on NetSuite ERP only. Cross-border payments comprise a very small component of money flows due to AvidXchange’s geographically centered customer verticals.
Choosing the Right Fit: What Your Business Needs Next
Choosing the right AP software system really comes down to scale, complexity, compliance, and long-term growth plans.
For organizations that expect to grow and scale internationally, manage rising invoice volumes, and tighten up compliance without expanding headcount, Tipalti is the most future-proof option.
It has remarkable global payments reach, built-in tax and sanctions safeguards, and end-to-end automation that reduces up to 80% of AP workload while ensuring audit readiness.
